The brand also offers music and choreography a clothing line Zumba Gold classes, geared to seniors Zumba Toning, a sculpting class using weighted sticks that sound like maracas and ZumbAtomic, a program for kids aged 5 to 12. And Zumba executives continue to feed the frenzy. Today, there are an estimated 4 million Zumba enthusiasts and 25,000 instructors in 40 countries, according to Perlman. In 2005, Perez, Perlman, and Aghion developed an educational division, wrote a training manual, and began offering Zumba workshops to those interested in teaching. "The crazy thing was we were getting all these people from all around the country who bought these videos and wanted to teach it," says Perlman. The three began selling DVDs via infomercial in 2002 and were very successful, but enthusiasts demanded more. In 1999, Perlman and entrepreneur Alberto Aghion approached Perez about taking Zumba to the mass market. Zumba's success grew steadily after Perez moved first to Bogota, Colombia and later to Miami. "I just said, 'Class today is different,'" says Perez, 37, who was also a dance instructor. So he dug through his bag of tapes and grabbed a mix of salsa and meringue music he personally liked to dance to. Colombia-born Alberto "Beto" Perez was teaching an aerobics class in his native Cali in 1986 and discovered he had forgotten his usual music. "We say ditch the workout join the party," says Zumba co-founder and CEO, Alberto Perlman of Hollywood, Fla. That's exactly what creators were aiming for when they released Zumba (Spanish slang for buzz like a bee or move fast) to the world. They're somewhere else they're not in Pittsburgh when they take a Zumba class." "I can have the bluest day, be depressed, hormones ranging, whatever, and get in front of that class, turn on the music and I recharge my life, my soul."Īdds McCalister: "When I put on Traigo Una Pena, a cha cha, my class just screams.

"Latin music just tends to make you feel happy and good," says McCalister, 53. Zumba, an aerobic dance class set to South American beats, is hot in health clubs and exercise studios from Miami to Los Angeles and everywhere in between. "I let the music move them and inspire them." McCalister coaches her students to feel the music, be it salsa, meringue, or flamenco. Zumba is great because we can use music from all over the world! I have some Brazilian pop, some French songs, some songs from India….Latin rhythms pulse from Pittsburgh's Club One aerobics studio, where Maria McCalister leads a Zumba class packed with the glistening bodies of nearly 50 people seeking to swivel, pivot, and shake their way to fitness. So those are some samples of my playlists for Zumba. In this Zumba Music Playlist I used another warmup mix along with rhythms such as salsa, reggaeton, belly dance, and more! This is a very international mix with only Bang Bang and the warmup and stretch being in my 30%. Songs that come from Zumba Fitness are songs I got for being a ZIN member. He makes warmup mixes for Zumba instructors! Find his music here! In this playlist, everything is international except the warmup, toning, abs, cool down/stretch and the Britney Spears song. Some of my favorites come from DJ Baddmixx.

I often will use custom warmup mixes that I find online. This is my second sample Zumba Music Playlist. I have a mix of different music styles including merengue, salsa, hip hop, and more! The Cup of Life is our warmup, Let’s Dance is our “toning” song, “Boyfriend” works our abs (see my video for that song here!) And then the cool down to Save the Last Dance and we stretch to My Girl.

This is my sample Zumba Music Playlist #1. Usually a 45 minute class will accomodate 12-15 songs. I used to teach an hour class, so I got to do a few more songs. Here are some screen shots of some of my Zumba playlists. I also usually include an ab song toward the end.

I always get questions about my Zumba music playlist! I have talked before about the Zumba music….and people LOVE seeing my playlist!Ī typical Zumba playlist should consist of at least 70% international music (including Latin, Belly Dance, Carribean, and other world music) and 30% of whatever the instructor wants! I use everything in my 30% from Country, to Hip Hop, to Broadway!Īlso, a Zumba playlist should always have a warmup, a “toning” song (where you warm up and work major muscles, like legs, abs, arms), then have the workout portion, and then have a cool down/stretch section.
